There's someone at the window

With his family holding firm pedigrees in politics and television journalism, 22-year-old artist and photographer Jesse Willesee grew up watching the strange and the ordinary distorted and empowered by the lens. His artwork, as showcased in his highly successful debut show, He Says He’s Tired (2007), is a deliberately simplistic paean to his generation. Using child-like illustration and incorrect spelling to highlight the simplification of modern communication, he channels a recklessness coupled with an immense sentimentality for the pioneering libertines who came before him and left an unrepeatable path. But when everything has already been done, you start at the beginning. His entry in the Populous Cast, There’s Someone at the Window, is an evolution and shift in perspective. The featured work in his current collection, Willesse’s suburban-inspired tome showcases the malaise of life outside the city that fuels his sense of adventure. His new characters are trapped, hounded by vague but menacing forces that sit too close to old-fashioned ideals of home. Willesee’s collection of photography, There Were Photos Everywhere, Even On The Walls, including his groundbreaking collection of night scapes. www.myspace.com/jessewillesee
